What Is the Difference Between a Pouch and Rollstock?

The practical difference between buying a finished package and film that becomes a package on the filling line.

Short answer

A pouch is supplied as a finished premade package that is opened, filled, and sealed. Rollstock is supplied as a continuous web of film that forms into packages on automated equipment. The product may look similar on shelf, but the equipment, specifications, labor, order economics, and buying process differ.

Start with the filling operation

If a plant has form-fill-seal or flow-wrapping equipment, rollstock may be the intended input. Premade-pouch equipment handles finished pouches. A package format cannot be selected responsibly without knowing how the plant will fill it.

The RFQs ask for different details

Rollstock requires web width, repeat, unwind, core, roll limits, and machine information. Pouches require finished dimensions, gusset, zipper or other features, seal geometry, and filling method. Both still need product, structure, print, volume, and ship-to information.
