How Do I Choose a Food Grade Laminated Pouch Manufacturer in the USA?

How to evaluate a United States food grade laminated pouch manufacturer: lamination, barrier, cure, food contact documents, certification, and testing.

Short answer

A food grade laminated pouch combines two or more film layers bonded together for print protection, barrier, and sealing. Choose a manufacturer that can explain its lamination process and cure controls, document food contact compliance for the full structure, hold a food safety certification such as SQF, and supply filled samples for testing.

Key takeaways

  • Lamination joins layers for barrier, print protection, and sealing.
  • Ask how adhesive cure is controlled before converting.
  • Food contact documents must cover the whole structure.
  • Test filled samples with your product.

What lamination does

A laminated pouch usually has an outer printed layer, sometimes a barrier layer, and an inner sealant layer. Printing on the inside of the outer layer, called reverse printing, buries the ink between layers, protecting it from scuffing and keeping it away from the product.

Lamination methods and cure

Common methods include solventless and solvent based adhesive lamination. Adhesives need time to cure before pouches are converted and shipped. Ask how the plant controls and checks cure, because it affects odor, bond strength, and food safety.

Barrier and structure

Say what the product needs protection from: oxygen, moisture, light, or aroma loss. Ask the supplier to propose a structure and explain why. Request barrier data with test conditions.

Food contact and certification

Ask for compliance letters for the full structure, including adhesives and inks, and the current food safety certificate for the producing site.

Testing

Fill and seal samples with your real product, then test seal strength, drop performance, and shelf life under the conditions the package will see.

How to compare your shortlist

Ask every supplier the same questions on the first call. Which plant will run the job, and does its certificate cover that site? Which print method and how many colors in one pass? How is color approved and by what standard? What starts the lead time clock, purchase order or approved artwork? What documents come with the first order? Who is your day to day contact when something goes wrong? Write the answers in one table. The supplier that answers clearly and in writing is usually the one that will run your job the same way every time.

Where PCI fits

Where PCI fits: Matt Louie, who writes this site, sells for Poly Craft Industries (PCI). PCI prints by flexographic printing only, runs new 10 color presses, is SQF and GMI certified, quotes a standard lead time of 3 to 4 weeks after artwork approval, and supplies brands sold at major retailers. PCI also makes stand up pouches and laminated pouches. That makes PCI one supplier to put on a short list, not an automatic answer. Use the checks on this page to compare PCI with every other supplier you are considering.

Questions buyers ask

Does PCI make laminated pouches?

Yes. PCI makes stand up pouches and laminated pouches, printed by flexo. Send your spec to Matt for a quote.

What is solventless lamination?

A lamination method that bonds layers with adhesive that contains no solvent. Cure time still has to be managed.

What is reverse printing?

Printing on the inside of the outer film so the ink is buried between layers.

What documents should a laminated pouch supplier provide?

Food contact letters for the full structure, the current food safety certificate, and a structure specification.
