Direct answer
Minimums follow the setup
A converter is not choosing a number to make a small brand wait. Plates, press makeup, and a film width that can run the job all happen before the first good package. A quantity that cannot carry that setup is a different kind of request, and it has to be talked through.
Ask how the minimum is expressed before you compare suppliers. Pieces, impressions, and pounds are different units. A minimum per SKU and a minimum per structure are different rules. Write the unit down.
Three drivers
Material has to be available in a width and a quantity the job can use. Plates or other tooling are made for the art and then spread across the packages that art will print. Press setup time is consumed at the start of the run, whether the run is long or short.
Change any one of those and the practical quantity can change. A new art with new plates is not the same request as a reorder on existing plates. Say which one you are.
Bags, pouches, and roll stock
A flat poly bag, a laminated stand-up pouch, and printed roll stock do not share one setup. Features add steps. A pouch with a zipper is not the same converting job as a plain bag. Roll stock adds unwind, repeat, and core to the spec, and the quantity is often talked about in impressions or length rather than only in pieces.
Send the format with the quantity. A piece count with no format cannot be judged.
Usage and the order you actually place
Annual usage is how much you expect to buy in a year. Order quantity is what you want made now. If the order is smaller than the way you use the package, you will hold inventory. If you order only what you need this month, you may repeat the setup more often.
The annual usage calculator turns a production cadence into a year number when you know the cadence. The multi-SKU planner is for a program with more than one item. Use them before you promise a quantity you cannot store.
Ways to plan around a minimum
Order less often and hold a bit more. Combine SKUs that share a structure and a size. Drop a feature the product does not need. Keep art stable so a reorder can use existing plates. None of these removes the setup. They make the setup serve more packages.
Do not invent a smaller structure in the RFQ just to look flexible. A structure the product cannot use is not a plan.
- Longer gap between orders, if you can store them
- Fewer artwork versions on the same size
- A simpler feature list
- A reorder on approved art rather than a new design every time
What to ask before the RFQ
Ask which unit the minimum uses, whether it is per SKU or per structure, whether a reorder on the same plates is treated differently, and what happens if you need less than that quantity. Ask the supplier to write the answer on the quote.
We prequalify, then quote. Send the spec and the quantity you can use. The answer is on the quote, not on this page.
A planning sheet
Format. Structure or sample. Number of SKUs and how many share art. Order quantity you want now. How often you reorder. Whether art is new or a reorder. Ship-to location and how much you can store. Leave the minimum line blank for the supplier to fill in.
Ask what the quantity means
Send the quantity with the quote request. We prequalify, then quote. If the quantity is an estimate, label it as an estimate.
| Driver | What it is | What to tell the supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Film planned for the job | Structure or a sample, and the width if you know it |
| Tooling | Plates for the art | New art or a reorder on existing plates |
| Setup | Press and converting made ready | Format, features, and how often you run |
| Unit | Pieces, impressions, or pounds | Ask which unit the minimum uses |
| SKU rule | Per item or per shared structure | How many arts share the size |
Questions buyers ask
What is a typical minimum for custom printed pouches?
There is no number on this page. A typical number would hide the structure, the print, and the setup. Send the quantity you have. We prequalify, then quote.
Why can a laminated pouch and a flat bag differ?
They are different setups. A laminate adds layers and often a cure step. A flat bag does not. Ask for the minimum on the format you are actually buying.
Can I order less than the minimum?
Ask with the quantity you have. The answer belongs on the quote, after the spec is clear enough to judge the setup. We prequalify, then quote.
How do I plan orders around a minimum?
Match order quantity to usage and storage, share structures across SKUs where you can, and keep art stable so reorders are simpler. The usage calculator helps when you know the cadence.
Does the minimum include tooling?
Ask. Tooling and the production quantity are often separate lines. The quote should say whether plates are included in the quantity conversation or listed on their own.
