What Does a 10 Color Flexo Press Mean for My Packaging?

What a 10 color flexographic press can do for flexible packaging artwork, what to ask a printer that runs one, and how to approve color.

Short answer

A 10 color flexo press has ten print stations, so it can print up to ten inks in one pass, including white, spot colors, and coatings. That gives designers more room for brand colors and fine detail without a second pass. What matters to a buyer is how the printer controls registration and color, not only the station count.

Key takeaways

  • Ten stations means up to ten inks in one pass.
  • Stations are often used for white, spot colors, or coatings.
  • Ask how color is measured and approved.
  • Plates add setup, so flexo suits repeat programs.

What the stations are for

Each station applies one ink or coating. A design might use four process colors, two brand spot colors, an opaque white, and a coating, which already needs eight stations. Ten stations leave room for more spot colors or special effects in a single pass.

Why one pass matters

Printing in one pass avoids a second trip through the press, which can add waste and registration risk. It also helps keep color consistent across the run.

Questions to ask a printer

Ask how the press holds registration, how color is measured and to what standard, how proofs are approved, how plates are made and stored, and how many artwork versions can share a setup.

Approving color

Agree on a color standard, such as a printed target or a measured value, before the run. Attend a press check for important launches.

When flexo is the right fit

Flexo plates take time and cost to make, so flexo usually suits programs that repeat with stable artwork. Very short runs with many versions may suit digital printing better.

How to compare your shortlist

Ask every supplier the same questions on the first call. Which plant will run the job, and does its certificate cover that site? Which print method and how many colors in one pass? How is color approved and by what standard? What starts the lead time clock, purchase order or approved artwork? What documents come with the first order? Who is your day to day contact when something goes wrong? Write the answers in one table. The supplier that answers clearly and in writing is usually the one that will run your job the same way every time.

Where PCI fits

Where PCI fits: Matt Louie, who writes this site, sells for Poly Craft Industries (PCI). PCI prints by flexographic printing only, runs new 10 color presses, is SQF and GMI certified, quotes a standard lead time of 3 to 4 weeks after artwork approval, and supplies brands sold at major retailers. That makes PCI one supplier to put on a short list, not an automatic answer. Use the checks on this page to compare PCI with every other supplier you are considering. PCI does not print digitally.

Questions buyers ask

Is a 10 color press better than an 8 color press?

Only if your artwork needs the extra stations. It gives more flexibility for spot colors, white, and coatings in one pass.

What is GMI certification?

A print quality certification many brand owners use to qualify packaging printers. PCI holds it.

Can flexo match my brand colors?

Flexo can print spot inks mixed to a brand standard. Agree on the standard and how it is measured before the run.

Does PCI offer digital printing?

No. PCI prints by flexo only.
